Crowd Watching - And Waterworks, At The Brewhouse
08 May 2008
Jess Lane Writes...
Another Monday night… another comedy night at the Brewhouse. It was my second time of going and the popularity had obviously spread- the crowd number had doubled- which for me, meant one thing- the chances of me being part of an ‘audience interaction’ had effectively halved. Excellent. Against the majority, I found the humour of one of the comedians- Alex Maypole- not quite on my wavelength. While he was on I contented myself with crowd watching- some people were laughing so hard I was sure there was going to be waterworks- and I’m not talking eyes... For me, his performance was more than made up for by the presence of MC Elliot Tiney- whose quick wit made me seriously consider asking for his hand in marriage. Jessica Fostekew (while being automatically brilliant as she shares the forename-of-genius) focused on language- particularly sparkling was the observation of some of the ignorance of the upper-middle class. Another accurate observation of fast food chains was made by Headliner, Carl Donnelly: for just how many people does it really take to make a sandwich? Other than the MC (of course) Carl Donnelly would have to be my personal favourite- indeed, he did score highly with the audience- his unique understanding of student humour let him really strike the right notes, especially when putting down Hecklers. Surprisingly, the larger crowd was particularly nice to new-boy Christopher Battle; his first ever performance went down well with the audience, earning him much applause. The popularity of the comedy nights is obviously growing. More and more students with a modern sense of humour are hearing of it; soon enough it’ll be standing room only. [Editor’s note: Comedy Nights at The Brewhouse, Taunton, are free for three Mondays during most months and offer one Monday per month of Headline Acts for a small fee. See the Brewhouse website for more details.]
